It is hard to put into words how wonderful this place is, and how grateful I am for their care for my mother. My mother had lived in assisted-living for many years, but had gotten to the point where she was no longer able to live independently. She felt fiercely independent, however, and resisted help in her assisted living facility. Her dementia was progressing, as well, which made the matter more difficult. A friend recommended Vivant to me and I contacted them. I was invited to come and look at the facility and speak to the administrative staff. Upon driving to the house on Minnehaha, I knew it was the place for my mom. It looks like a lovely residence and is located on a beautiful residential street. Inside, the rooms are flooded with light. There is a beautiful view of a courtyard; blue sky, trees, grass. A table was set for a family style meal. The residents were all sitting together comfortably. Staff were chatting with them and engaging them in activities. The bathrooms are set up perfectly such that showers can be taken without fear of falling. That was a big issue for my mother. I selected a shared room for mom, but the layout was such that it felt like a private room. The staff helped me make the agonizing decision about how to transport my mother to the facility since I knew if I told her I was moving her she would not stand for it. However, I knew it was the best move for my mother. Once I transported her and had to say goodbye, it was excruciating because she told me over and over not to leave her there but the staff was so knowledgeable and experienced in handling that situation that I had the confidence to walk out the door. A few days later, my mother had settled in and was very comfortable there. She resided at Minnehaha until she was placed in hospice and passed away peacefully in her room there, in her own bed. She was always treated with kindness and respect and, even true love. The caregivers are truly angels and saints living here on earth. Caring for those residents is an extraordinarily difficult job, and they do it with love, grace and kindness every day, all day. The only complaint my mother had was that she didn’t like the food. I have to say that a few times when I was there the food did not look too appealing. However, in the grand scheme of things, that is one very small issue. The positives completely outweighed that negative. While we were lucky that cost was not an issue with the care of my mother, we saved an enormous amount of money when we moved her to Minnehaha. We had been paying for mom’s assisted living apartment and had hired personal caregivers for her. At Minnehaha, we got a significantly better level of care at a significantly lower price. I visited my mom almost daily and got to know the staff, residents, and their families well. One thing that was really helpful was being able to share with the other family members the difficulties and heartbreak of watching your loved one decline. When my mother was put on hospice, the Minnehaha staff worked extremely well with the hospice staff which ensured my mother’s seamless care. They were extremely sensitive and helpful when I had to pack up my mothers things and leave after her passing. In sum, I hope you are lucky enough to place your loved one at Vivant Minnehaha and have the same experience that I had.
