1. Care and staffing

Describe the person’s current needs, preferences and concerns. Ask the community to explain its services and limits in plain language.

  • How do you assess someone’s needs before they move in?
  • Which services are included, and which involve an outside provider?
  • Who is available during the day, overnight and on weekends?
  • What training do staff receive for the support we are discussing?
  • How are care plans reviewed and changes communicated?
  • What happens if the person needs a service you cannot provide?

2. Daily life and personal choice

Discuss what a normal week could look like. Ask how residents shape their routines and how the community responds to individual preferences.

  • How flexible are meal times, menus and dining arrangements?
  • How do residents choose activities or suggest something new?
  • What options are there for quiet time, hobbies and outdoor access?
  • What are the arrangements for visitors, pets and personal belongings?
  • How do transport reservations work, and what costs extra?
  • How are privacy and personal preferences respected?

3. Safety and practical support

Ask staff to describe their procedures and how residents learn to use them. Confirm details relevant to the person’s mobility, communication and support needs.

  • How does a resident call for help from their room and shared spaces?
  • What happens after a request for urgent help?
  • How are medication support and outside appointments coordinated, if offered?
  • What are the plans for severe weather, evacuation and power interruptions?
  • How are families contacted during a disruption?
  • How are concerns or incidents documented and followed up?

4. Costs and agreements

Request an itemized quote for the room and services you are considering. Read the agreement and ask for explanations of terms you do not understand.

  • What does the quoted price include and exclude?
  • Which charges are monthly, usage-based or one-time?
  • How might costs change if support needs change?
  • When can prices increase, and how is notice given?
  • What do deposits or reservation payments secure?
  • What are the notice, cancellation and refund terms?

5. Moving in and future transitions

Ask how the community supports a move and what would happen if the arrangement stopped meeting the person’s needs.

  • Who coordinates the move, paperwork and initial assessment?
  • What should we bring, and what can be arranged ahead of time?
  • How are new residents introduced to staff and daily routines?
  • How are temporary absences or hospital stays handled?
  • What circumstances could require a move or end the agreement?
  • Who helps plan a transition, and what costs or notice terms apply?

6. Family communication and concerns

Agree on communication preferences while respecting the resident’s choices and privacy. Ask who to contact and how issues are resolved.

  • Who is our usual contact for day-to-day questions?
  • How does the resident choose who receives updates?
  • How can families take part in planning when the resident wants that?
  • How are complaints received, tracked and answered?
  • Who should we contact if a concern is not resolved?
  • Where can we find current provider information and inspection records?

8. Frequently asked questions

Do I need to ask every question?

No. Choose the questions that apply to the person and the type of community. Use follow-up questions whenever an answer is unclear or too general to help you decide.

What if the community cannot answer during a tour?

Write down the question and ask who can respond and when. Request written clarification for details that affect services, costs or the agreement.

Can these questions confirm the right level of care?

No. They help you understand a provider’s offer. Discuss individual care needs with appropriate professionals and the community’s assessment team.
