San Jose Gardens

I’ve worked with the staff at SJG for several years, and they continue to impress me. The building is clean, beautifully remodeled, and truly feels like a welcoming place. What stands out most is how sincerely the staff care for their residence. Communication is always clear and consistent, and I would trust them with my loved one anytime.

My brother and I placed our mother in the San Jose Gardens facility in mid April of this year (2026). I was extremely impressed with everything about it but it quickly went downhill. Three days after being placed there she choked on a piece of food, given the heimlich maneuver, she was still choking so 911 was called and she was taken to Memorial hospital were she underwent a procedure with general anesthesia to remove a "hunk of pork chop" (this per the hospital staff) from her esophagus. This may sound as though the facility acted efficiently and they did, but lets take a step back to the fact that the culinary director and I had discussed that my mother should be on a soft foods only diet. For the two days following this, she was given only broth. Note that my mom is very thin already and giving her only broth, well I have no words for how cruel this was. On the third day after the choking incident I found her slumped over in a wheelchair (note that she was ambulatory upon entering the facility), her pants were stained with dried food. I took her back to her room and changed her clothes, she had dried feces in her underpants and one of her feet was completely black and blue and extremely swollen. An X-ray tech had already been called but no one mentioned any of this to me until I brought it up. As it turns out, her big to was broken. I was told later that she must have done it herself while alone in her room. It's more plausible that her foot was either run over by a wheelchair or stepped on. After this I pulled her out immediately and brought her home to live with me. At this point I couldn't trust them to look after her, and if I had to stay with her all day to make sure she was safe there really was no point having her there. Also to anyone reading this and are considering placing a loved one here - make sure you check what medications are being given. My mother was being given the antipsychotic drug Olanzapine which isn't recommended for the elderly especially those with dementia. I did ask for the money that we had paid returned to us knowing of course they wouldn't. But my emails were not even acknowledged. As with everything else, this is a business first.

My mom was sent here after a traumatic accident that damaged her back and brain. San Jose Gardens Memory Care was very supportive, kind and caring. They helped her improve so she was able to return home with supportive care. Mom made friends that frequently checked in on her. Thank you so much!!! -Love Stacey Waters

My mother who has dementia has been cared for at San Jose Gardens for over a year. The facility is clean, bright and well maintained. The staff, physicians and medical director are attentive, knowledgeable, helpful, friendly, organized and kind. Updates on my mother's conditions are communicated to my family effectively. When I request help with her physicians report or other related medical documentation the facility responds quickly in a timely manner to have the forms completed. There's activities that are planned for her daily, fed properly, maintains her walking and interacts with the staff. So far I'm pleased with San Jose Gardens on taking on the responsibility for caring care of my aging parent. Go check this facility out for yourself. Highly recommended

My mother spent some months here. The facility is very good for those with severe memory issues, not early stages in my opinion. The reason I gave 2 stars is because after paying 10’s of thousands over the months my mother stayed there, they have a policy that requires 30 day written notice to move your loved one. My mother moved out on march 31st which mind you, the cost per month is $7400 a month. They were told she was leaving on the 11th of March, but notified to the director on March 18th. However, they still expect a prorated amount paid to them into the month of April. Nearly $4,700 more dollars. It’s extremely greedy and this policy should not be allowed. Greed is gross. No willingness to work with you on the final amount just “that’s the policy”. Disgusting.
