A couple of staff members — Sean and Eddie in particular — were genuinely warm and caring. The concerns: Cleanliness was a recurring issue. Vacuuming seemed infrequent, and bathrooms did not seem to be cleaned on a regular basis. One side of the building also lacked adequate air conditioning, which is unacceptable in…

My father was a resident at Brookdale's memory care unit, and our experience was mixed. The good: The food was consistently good, and the staff was flexible about providing extra meals for spouse and visitors, which we appreciated. The rooms and bathrooms are a good size. A couple of staff members — Sean and Eddie in particular — were genuinely warm and caring. The concerns: Cleanliness was a recurring issue. Vacuuming seemed infrequent, and bathrooms did not seem to be cleaned on a regular basis. One side of the building also lacked adequate air conditioning, which is unacceptable in Florida. His room was routinely close to 80 degrees (he was only there in the cooler months fortunately). The "Daily Path" program was a major disappointment. It was heavily promoted during the sales process, but in practice it didn't really seem to exist. Day-to-day life for residents mostly consisted of meals and watching TV. There seemed to be very little meaningful engagement or structured activity that the memory care residents participated in. More concerning, a nurse overlooked a medical issue that should have been caught. When it came time to leave, the discharge process felt disjointed and informal. If you're evaluating memory care options, I'd encourage you to look past the sales p pitch and ask detailed questions about what a typical day actually looks like for residents.

We looked at 4 other places in Lakeland this was the right spot for my mother. She is very happy living at Brookdale Highlands and I highly recommend this caring community.

My brother and I toured several assisted living homes for our mom and we felt Brookdale was superior, by far, for many reasons. My brother jokingly said the Brookdale director paid $5 to many residents for them to come out and be friendly. We didn't get that at any other place ( and she did not pay them, by the way). The staff, within just a short while, knew my mom and even us! The staff is so sweet to all the residents!! There are always so many activities for the residents to enjoy. It's actually hard now to reach mom on her landline as she's always out of her room enjoying being with other residents in one of the lovely screened porches or the gazebo, if weather allows. The temperature in the common areas is nice for the residents and they monitor the heat in their own apartments, to their liking. The main thing that swayed my brother and I about Brookedale's staff is that they have nurses there all the time that really work with my sister ( mom's medical power of attorney) to monitor her occasional issues (UTI or ear wax buildup) as well as her daily medicines,etc. The staff really could not be any nicer or accommodating to mom - like when she oversleeps and would otherwise miss her noon meal, which is their main meal- they have taken her a tray. We are thrilled with how mom is treated there and how much she likes it there ( food too!!)
I toured Brookdale Highlands. They were great. I would say that they were open and friendly. They were accommodating to what we were looking for. We got to interact with some of the residents, and it was great too. The residents seemed happy. The facility was very clean and organized. The activities looked very interactive, and the facility was in great shape.
Accessibility to the on site nurse. Everyone made a point to call me by name. Promptly answering the door. Most were willing to help with messes
