Brilliance Assisted Living

Assisted Living without Assistance Diamond, formerly known as Brilliance in Edgewater is an assisted living and memory care facility. My family member lived there for almost three years. As with most assisted living facilities (I visited many), an image is presented that sounds and looks great. Only later does one learn the reality. My family member’s first day at the facility began when he was awoken at 6:00 AM to take a shower. He did not respond well. It seemed that certain members of management were looking to anger him and provoke a response. An elderly person who acquires the label of being aggressive, has fewer options for their care. The only thing that made the situation tolerable, were the low paid staff who genuinely cared for the people at the facility. Since trying to provide good care without management support is draining, some of the staff had left or were in the process of leaving. If a resident needed help with their TV remote, there was no one to help them. The food was mostly prepackaged and often fried, such as fries and chicken nuggets. Soups and desserts were better. In memory care, favorite drinks, napkins and silverware were frequently forgotten. My family member lived in memory care for about 7 months. They are understaffed. A short craft activity from a part-time activity director is planned for some days. Clients were “on their own” most of the time and got little attention. Hearing aids were lost and mishandled. Memory care residents were expected to supply their own toilet paper. Due to more frequent falls and some aggressive behavior we were forced to hire private one on one care 24/7 at an extra $30 an hour. This stopped the falls, but there was no reduction in the monthly assisted living fee even though the private one on one health workers provided most of the care. It has been a learning experience. An assisted living facility is a business. They try to maximize income and minimize costs. Once a person has moved into a facility, there is a strong inclination to not put the person through the trauma of a second move. A business knows this, and therefore doesn’t need to try that hard. Daily visits to a loved one living at an assisted living facility are important. Developing a relationship with the frontline caregivers is vital. These selfless people were the heroes at Diamond.

Diamond Assisted Living Facility truly lives up to its name. The moment you walk in, the bright, open spaces make the entire community feel warm and inviting. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming—they go out of their way to make residents and families feel comfortable and supported. The pool area is absolutely beautiful, offering peaceful scenery that adds to the relaxing atmosphere. The on-site therapy gym is spacious, well-organized, and never feels crowded, which makes it easy and enjoyable for residents to stay active. Overall, Diamond Assisted Living is a wonderful place that shows genuine care in every detail. Highly recommended!

Had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful facility, it is is clean, beautiful, and has a real homey vibe. The staff are warm, caring, and always helpful, and the Director of Admissions (Deby Okum) is outstanding at guiding people through the process. I also noticed the thoughtful activities, inviting common spaces, and pleasant outdoor areas — everything feels welcoming and well cared for, I recommend this place for your loved one.

I toured this property last week, and it is absolutely beautiful. They have a huge swimming pool in the Courtyard, a Pub and very large apartments! My kind of retirement living!
