Nursing and Rehabilitation

My father’s experience at this rehabilitation facility was extremely disappointing, especially considering how medically complex and vulnerable he was when he arrived. After everything he had already been through, our family trusted this facility to provide him with the medication management, nursing care, communication, and intensive rehabilitation he needed to safely recover. Unfortunately, there were multiple situations that made me lose confidence in his care. There were issues with medications, concerns that I repeatedly had to advocate for, and times when I felt that changes in his condition were not taken as seriously or addressed as quickly as they should have been. As his daughter, I was very involved in his care, and I should not have had to constantly worry about whether things were being done correctly or whether I needed to step in to make sure he was safe. Ultimately, I had to take matters into my own hands and have him sent to the hospital when I became concerned about his condition. A rehabilitation facility caring for medically fragile patients needs to recognize changes quickly, communicate clearly with families, and take concerns seriously. I do want to acknowledge that there were individual staff members who were kind, compassionate, and genuinely cared about my dad, and I am grateful for them. This review is not meant to take away from those individuals. However, based on our overall experience, I cannot recommend this facility for someone with significant medical needs without their family being extremely involved and advocating for them every step of the way. Families place an enormous amount of trust in rehabilitation facilities when they leave someone they love in their care. That trust should never be taken lightly.

I had high hopes for this place. My sister had been at Kindred Acute Care Hospital after a tracheostomy for respiratory issues. Kindred did a wonderful job rehabbing her acute issues. They actually got her off of the trach which was amazing! She was transferred to Harborview in late March of this year. She had been placed on a BiPap with oxygen while at Kindred. They transferred her without making sure there was a machine in place. Harborview said they had a Bipap for her and started her on the machine TWO DAYS later. We live two hours away and there was no facility nearby so we had to rely on them. Things were good at first but she seemed to be declining. They moved her to another room and then a third room. Each time the staff was uninformed of her needs. She went 4 nights without oxygen hooked to her machine. The respiratory therapist was very helpful but he is only on call and only came to the facility when they called him. A month later we find out she has been on a CPAP the entire time...NOT A BiPap!!! No wonder she was declining. Over the time she was there I would call, get put on eternal hold, the phone would finally disconnect and I would have to call back only for it to happen all over again...time and again. Thank God my sister had her cell phone and was still able to use it. She called me to say she couldn't breathe and no one was answering the call light. Of course I called the facility and was told there was no light on. I called my sister back and she assured me she was pushing the button but still no one arrived. My sister cried "Please call 911 and GET ME OUT OF HERE!" I called the facility back again and asked them to call 911. I was put through to a man and I explained what was going on and that my sister couldn't breathe and to please call 911. He said to me "First of all YOU don't give ME DIRECTIONS!" That was all I could take and I called 911 myself and they arrived immediately and transferred her to Orlando Health where she was admitted and once I explained what had happened they were astonished! I hate leaving a bad review. The receptionist and several other administrative staff tried to help but they were not the ones personally caring for my sister. If you have a loved one in need of respiratory care...find another facility. I hope this saves someone else from what we have gone through. ***I am not the same Lisa Davis who previously left a poor review.
