Miami Jewish Health Systems

I took my grandmother out of Miami Jewish Home because I didn't like the care that she was getting there. I hated it there. It was supposed to be the number one living facility, but I took her out because I didn't like the way they were treating her, and I didn't like how they took care of her. The staff was not caring, the physicians didn't watch over the staff to make sure the patients were being taken care of directly. I'm a nurse so I used to go every day when I got off work to make sure that my grandmother was being taken care of. She was a fall risk, and by being a fall risk they would leave her in the wheelchair. In the time that she was at Miami Jewish Home she was sitting up in her wheelchair because they said they didn't have enough staff to watch her as she would get up, and they couldn't restrain her down to the bed, and I didn't like that! The only time she was able to lay down was when me and my elderly father would go there and place her in bed and let her rest while we were there. When we would get ready to leave we had to put her back in the wheelchair, then they would take her to a little dining area, lock her chair so she couldn't get up, that's how she stayed there, and that's the care I didn't like! I would sit and watch them be mean to other patients, too. The rooms and the activities were great, and if a family member comes in to see it, it's phenomenal. I liked the look of it, I liked the cleanliness of it, and the food was pretty good, but I did not like the way they cared for the patients.

The hospital sent my husband to Miami Jewish Health. Surprisingly, the place was very nice, and I'm impressed with the care that they're giving him. He's only been there a couple of days now. They feed him, and he seems to be resting well. He's still very weak. He became very unresponsive last week and ended up at the hospital to the hospice center at Miami Jewish Health. I've only been there twice, and the staff seemed very attentive and very caring. Medicare pays for the hospice care.

I have a relative in the Rehab and no one answers the phone at the nursing station 2Toppal. This is so upsetting and frustrating because with the Covid-19 no one is allowed to visit so a phone call to ask simple questions takes away alot of anxiety and concern when you are a family member. This is an ongoing issue and needs to be resolved. Sometimes the elderly patients will not answer the phone in the room so family members rely on the nursing staff to communicate with the family about their love ones. My relative have been there since Nov.25 and I have reported this issue to management and nothing has been done to my satisfaction. I know I am not the only concerned family member 😔 The nursing station is named 2 Toppal Rehab. The phone just rings continuously unacceptable!! It should be a secretary assigned to this unit at all times. SMH. It's no way possible the staff is busy and entire 12 hour shift where the phone can't be answered. My mother-in-law is in assisted living at Miami Jewish Home (Douglas Gardens), but they have all the levels of care. She has a 24/7 aide who was provided from an outside source approved by them. It's an excellent facility. Even their kosher food is good. They have an upgraded clinic and the staff is adequate to meet those credentials. They also have the Alzheimer's or dementia unit. I absolutely recommend them. One does not have to be Jewish to be accepted there. The food is excellent and the place is spotless. The staff and the residents are friendly and engaging and they know everyone by their first name. I have no reservations with that facility whatsoever. It's very well known even from some nursing staff members that I spoke to down here in Key Largo. It's an absolutely superior facility. The grounds are maintained well and are very attractive. I have never seen a resident in need of attention. They do the rehab there, they have entertainment, and they have a calendar of events. They always have something to keep the residents occupied. They have outings and shopping. They bring in talent, and I've always enjoyed that. She has a studio, and it's got a monster bathroom and a very adequate space in terms of square footage. One wall that's 25 feet minimum is all glass and it has curtains so you can control the light. They have a small cafeteria adjacent to the dining room. I've eaten there with her and everything is absolutely perfect.

My experience with MJHS has been nothing but excellent, from day 1. They have become a family to me and my parents and I have great peace of mind knowing that they are in the best possible place with caring and professional people around them at all times. I visited several facilities as I was looking for a place for both my parents. Dad has advanced Alzheimer's and mom has had several strokes, dementia, and breast cancer, among other things. My one and only choice was always Miami Jewish and I couldn't be happier that they now get to call it home. Everyone I have met, from admissions to nursing to doctors to therapists and even environmental services has been nothing but helpful, kind and professional. Mom has had several episodes of syncope and I have personally been there when they react and act immediately to help her out. They are incredibly patient with her and their main concern is her well-being and safety. My father's Alzheimer's has made the transition into the home quite difficult and having lived with my father for the past 2 years I know how tough it can be. Yet, everyone is always doing their best to make him feel at home, they reassure him and care for him and have his comfort and safety as their number 1 priority. There was a point when he was becoming more and more confused, and extremely agitated, and the medical staff, including Dr. Lopez and Dr. Agronin came in and addressed this issue by seeing and monitoring dad but also by talking to me to see which care route would be best for him. Dad is now doing much better, and that is all thanks to everyone's efforts. I live outside of the country, which makes matters for me that much more difficult. Yet, I know that they are in the best possible care right now. I speak with the staff and my parents every day to keep up to date. And, if anything should happen, the nurses or social worker immediately notify me. For example, my mother had to go back to the hospital for a pacemaker, and everyone was attentive and patient with me as I asked a million questions and of course worried about mom, dad being alone and me not being there. Being able to ask the questions and have a conversation about this, made me feel safe...even though I am halfway across the world. This weekend with Hurricane Irma threatening the state, they have extra staff on board, and are more than fully prepared to ensure that the residents are safe. And yes, I live outside of the country, but have family who visit mom and dad and they also agree with me in that the facility is simply great! All in all: the Physical Therapy staff is amazing. The nurses are caring, professional and kind. Their social worker is on top of things and is a great link in between all the different departments. The activities team does an amazing job at having different activities and picking as many residents up so that they can participate and become a part of the community (no easy task.). I could go on and on and have many more examples of why I absolutely recommend this facility. They have given me and my parents peace of mind, and that is simply priceless.
