Trying to speak with someone regarding assistance for a resident there is impossible. I am writing for a POA of a current resident & she can’t get anyone to speak to her. Her brother is there & is no longer being helped to bathe & needs help getting dressed as well. And he is totally unkempt. She needs to speak to someone immediately please. Can you provide numbers & names that I can pass on to her please?
I live out of state and my father is a resident of Heron House. I cannot say enough good things about this place and the staff that work there. They keep me informed about my father's physical health but also about his happiness and his well-being. They respond in a timely fashion when I have a question. The best part is that they treat him like a loved and valued member of the community and that gives me great peace of mind. I highly recommend Heron House. They have been a huge blessing to me and my father.
I really did like the check-in process. However as soon as you walked in the facility it smelled strongly of urine. The chapel where we met with the resident to do Holy Communion was very nice and intimate.
This facility is poorly run. Very little compassion from staff. My mom was given the wrong meds. They were the meds from the next door resident. Luckily she could tell and did not take them. That could have been disastrous. That is potential involuntary manslaughter! Staff was often rude and snide with their remarks. The food that should be hot was often cold. The food was terrible. They never fixed the a/c in the dining room and so in the summer they handed out styrofoam boxes and had the residents eat in their rooms. Then, instead of fixing the a/c, they moved the dining tables and chairs into the main entranceway of the facility. Pathetic. She had 12 hospital visits in 8 months. Ridiculous. This is someone who is normally very healthy. Her mental and physical health declined while she was at Heron House. I knew if I didn't get her out of there, she was going to die sooner than later. I finally was able to get her out and this was met with bitter and vindictive attitude of the director. Very unprofessional atmosphere. Very uncompassionate. Worst experience of my or my mother's life.
This place is disgusting. Low staffing, horrible food, seldom ever fruits with meals, Rarely any fresh vegetables and the patients that don't show up right on time have to have a hotdog because they don't make enough food for everyone. There is no selection for patients on any dietary restrictions.. The dining area is non existent anymore. They closed it down 3 months ago, claiming the oven was broke. An excuse for their lack of staffing. (Money saving) They have all the patients eating in the lobby at meal time now and replaced all the plates, glasses and silverware with styrofoam containers, styrofoam cups and plastic utensils so they don't have to wash dishes. It is infested with cockroaches crawling all over the place. So many, they bomb the rooms and they still come back. This is because the patients rooms are loaded with them and they go back and forth. They are crawling on the walls, coming through cracks and even through the outlets. Patients have stated they found them in their hair. The halls smell like urine because patients who should be in full care are in standard rooms wetting themselves and making the entire place smell like urine because they leave their doors open. These patients also are the one's with the roaches due to being unable to clean up after themselves. This place is completely mis-managed and no doubt not by the managers fault alone. We know the owners who buy these places. want to spend as little as possible in order to make more money. These places are businesses before anything else. Care is last in placement. This place should be examined with a fine tooth comb by AHCA. I would imagine the 5 stars are by management and/or associates. "Healthcare," should be two words not one and never on the same page.
Heron House of Largo is not a good place. I would not recommend it to anyone. When I told the director people stole $80 that was hidden in the bottom of my purse, her response was not, "We have to see who was on at that time so we can find who it is." Instead, she said, "Well, you need to buy a camera." My room is a double room. They usually have two people, so it's a huge studio. My walk-in closet will fit a bed in it. I have my own bathroom and a little kitchen area. It's wonderful. It has two large windows and has lots of light coming in. The rooms here are phenomenal, but it's not a safe place. They do my laundry. I stopped eating in the cafeteria because they kept losing my tickets. I wouldn't get any food and I got tired of waiting an hour. There's no heat in the cafeteria. It's freezing. The food quality keeps going down and down. For breakfast yesterday, they gave my friend two pieces of toast and a banana. The staff is terrible, but there are a couple that are outstanding. They haven't cleaned the carpets in years. On Wednesday, we have our nails done by Lynne, who is the activity director, and she's phenomenal. She was hired by the former owner. All the other activities are boring. Their card games are bingo and I don't do any of them. They also have karaoke, which a lot of people like. If you go to their website, what's there is what it used to be. This used to be one of the ten best places in Florida. They used to have two vans and a bus and they still have it on their website.
This facility is for residents that are pretty much independent. The rooms are shared mostly. There are a few private rooms but either way you must share a bathroom. The food is hit or miss. While they follow a menu many times the person cooking doesn't know how to make the meals. For example, last night the wipe board said pork stew. What we got was pork chunks with a side of the ever popular peas, carrots, green beans mixture out of a can. Stew should be in a bowl, with gravy veggies, and potatoes. I asked for a sandwich which they will make for you gladly. While the staff is pleasant almost all of them speak Spanish, no English. They understand you but can't respond in English. It frustrates the older residents. They also advertise that they have a barber/salon which they no longer have. They also advertise that we have activities daily, we don't. However the activities board is full, which they do in cases a potential resident stops in for a tour. They also advertise a shuttle service to take residents shopping, they don't do that either. There are no phones in the rooms or call lights in case you need help. They also have staff that aren't formally trained to be med techs yet they do the meds. That's a big no no. Also they don't provide linens or towels for bathing.
Heron House in Largo is truly a remarkable assisted living facility. As a guardian for a resident with many unique quirks, I have witnessed firsthand the exceptional care and kindness provided by the staff. Every team member goes above and beyond to ensure that he feels comfortable, respected, and valued. The environment at Heron House is warm and welcoming, with a genuine family-like atmosphere that sets it apart from other facilities. The staff are not only highly professional and skilled, but also incredibly patient and compassionate. They take the time to understand and cater to each resident’s individual needs, making sure they feel right at home. What impresses me the most is how the staff at Heron House consistently treat my ward with the utmost dignity and respect, despite his quirks. Their dedication to providing personalized care is evident in every interaction, and it brings me immense peace of mind knowing he is in such capable and caring hands. Heron House in Largo is a beacon of excellence in assisted living, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking a compassionate and supportive environment for their loved ones.
