Binda Assisted Living

My father who suffers from dementia stayed at this facility for two weeks. During that time, I became concerned about both his safety and the quality of care being provided to him. 24-hour supervision was not given as advertised, as the most serious incident involved my father repeatedly drinking a skincare product he thought was water that had been left accessible in his room. Security camera footage showed this occurring on two separate occasions in the middle of the night with no staff intervention. I called EMS immediately when I awoke and reviewed the camera footage, and he was transported to the hospital for evaluation. I was also concerned by care decisions being made during his stay. The facility's nurse practitioner, Mason Hershorin, recommended significant medication changes that Binda implemented even though he was not one of my father's treating physicians, requiring me to seek confirmation from his PCP and neurologist. I also later discovered changes involving his Medicare coverage that were unauthorized, which raised additional concerns. Mason Hershorin told me he could not bill Aetna Medicare and suddenly my father was being switched to Original Medicare without consent. Following the overnight skincare drinking incident, Binda informed me that the facility intended to move my father from his private room downstairs to a shared upstairs room, despite his cognitive impairment and safety risks, and that the use of a monitoring camera would be prohibited. Communication and language barriers were also at issue. Binda is extremely hard of hearing, even when wearing hearing aides. And the home health aides working there did not speak much English at all, so it was very difficult communicating with them about my father's care. I also overheard Binda telling a prospective resident's son that she treated people who were Jehovah's Witnesses's better than those who were not. She was offering him my father's private room and told him he could pay what he could afford and "Jehovah will add to me." Suddenly, the rate she agreed to take from my father the (non-Jehovah's Witness) was no longer acceptable. Very nefarious and discriminatory behavior experienced here. As a result of these issues, I removed my father from this facility. Choosing an assisted living facility for a loved one is one of the most important decisions a family can make. I encourage prospective residents and their families to ask detailed questions about overnight supervision, medication management, room assignments, insurance-related matters, and how changes in care needs are handled before placing a loved one here.
