Alternative Care Assisted

AKA LINDSAY’S ALTERNATIVE CARE; previously known as Joan Lindsay’s Alternative Care, should not be licensed to care for the elderly. They are guilty of Elder Abuse as my mom almost died there, and no one cared. The administrator, Suzie Esmie, did the sales pitch that she’s an RN, understands how to deal with dementia patients, knows the medications that work, and is involved daily with the care of each patient. We were told there would be 2 aides in the day and 1 at night to care for the 6 residents. The house appeared clean as it had a strong scent of Fabulosa at front door. Their bulletin board showed they did activities with the residents. So we were “sold”, and rented a private room…going to major expense in painting, and decorating it to make mom feel at home. We moved her in on June 23rd, and soon saw everything was the opposite of what we were told. There was only one aide, Kayla, for 6 patients. She always appeared tired, and just lined up everyone to sit in their recliners to watch TV all day, or sleep in their bedroom. Great activity for Dementia patients! The only other person in the house during the day was Mrs. G, a sweet lady, but she was not an aide…she was the cook. The night nurse was rude and seemed preoccupied about doing laundry. We visited Mom everyday that week at different times, and everyday she was in a badly soiled pull-up. She looked unkept, her breath stank, and her hair was oily. Each time, I had to take her into the bathroom and try to clean her myself. Kayla did not offer any assistance. However, after seeing how upset I was, she promised that mom would be showered and hair washed. When it wasn’t done the next day, I discovered the reason…my 94 year old mother was being forced to step into a bathtub, and of course resisted, as she was physically unable. Still trying to make things work, I wrote out full instructions of what was expected in the care of Mom…especially in regards to hygiene, and forwarded to Suzie and Kayla. Both Suzie and Kayla acknowledged receipt, but nothing was followed through. On Monday, June 29th, just 6 days after Mom was placed at Lindsay’s Alternative Care, we visited and found her totally unresponsive. Kayla casually said she had been sleeping all morning. Anyone could see she just wasn’t sleeping; she looked unconscious…like she was going into a coma. This was definitely an emergency situation where we had to get Mom to the ER. Kayla was totally nonchalant, and initially did not assist us. Mom was found to be severely dehydrated with extremely low blood sugar. The nurse said she’d probably not eaten all day. Had we not acted quickly, she probably would have died. Mom got to the ER about 1:45 pm. Suzie Esmie did not inquire about her condition until about 8:00 pm that night. This speaks volumes!! Mom was admitted to the hospital, but is fortunately safely home with me now. Would you want to put your loved one in this Home???
